Description

Two gangs from opposite sides of the street. One romance that dared to cross the line. In 1961, this movie adaptation of the Broadway smash-hit musical West Side Story broke box office records and won an incredible 10 Academy Awards, more than any other musical before or since. On the streets of New York City, two gangs (the Sharks and the Jets) battle for territory and respect. But when Tony, the leader of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Sharks leader Bernardo, a chain of events is set in motion that will tear their worlds apart forever. Featuring music from Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, and songs like “America,” “Somewhere,” and “Tonight,” this timeless story of star crossed lovers and rival gangs races to a shattering climax you will never forget.

The best musical in the history of the genre. Maria could possibly be the most beautiful song ever written.

Great Movie. I bought it on iTunes when I got my iPod 5th gen. Now it’s no longer in my library. What’s up with that?

Well done. A classic. Great songs. Wood is great in this. They should not have remade this (Speilberg’s version). Sacrilegious.

The classic street gang version of Romeo and Juliet, taking place in the days before guns were common place. It has some of the best muscial and dance numbers in the entire history of musicals - absolutely stellar, even if you hate musicals. There is no question as to how this could win 10 Oscars. Even today, it is seen as being just as impressive as when it came out. As for the choreography, suffice it to say that Michael Jackson was a major fan and 80% of his moves are copied directly from this film. As for the iTunes extras, they are all modern. The thing that is painfully missing - big time - is the original "making of" movie, which took behind the scenes cameras right to the street, including the acutal street gangs hired as security and the actual filming on the streets. I have no idea why they would leave this out. Bottom line: This is one of the greatest musicals ever filmed and it is just as relevant today as it ever was. This should be a required must-see in every high school, if only to address the futility of gang violence. My advice is to buy it - the HD version. It is well worth the money.

This movie is so authentic and real it made me cry the first time I watched it. I felt the pain of Tony getting shot, and the love he had for Maria. This movie has everything a movie should have!!! If you can't take it from a 13 year old, take it from the Oscars!!
