Description

It takes a village to make a movie, but when that village is Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin and not Hollywood, the results are at times bizarre, comical, and very American. With the help of his mother, his 82-year-old uncle, and a local cast of hilarious weirdos, filmmaker Mark Borchardt fights his way through internal and external roadblocks to achieve his goal, to make his movie, his way. His inspiration comes from films as disparate as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Seventh Seal, as well as his experiences growing up amid the grey skies, rusty cars, and ranch houses of Milwaukee's Northwest side. Spanning over two years of struggle, financial decline and spiritual crisis, American Movie is a story of ambition, obsession, excess, and one man's quest for the American Dream.

It's the most depressing, heartfelt, and inspiring movie I've ever seen. I would have never thought that a documentary would be the best movie I've seen.

This movie is what every reality show makes an artificial attempt to be. Uncle Bill would be an A&E superstar these days. Just a classic, must-see documentary.

One of my favorite documentaries of all time, up there with "Anvil!" and "Gates of Heaven." Mark Borchardt is a classic American working-class hero, a guy bursting with ambition but stuck in the cultural wasteland of the Upper Midwest, not a dummy exactly but abysmally educated like most Americans, mopping toilets and delivering newspapers when what he wants to be doing is directing movies. So he makes his own, with budgets of about $1.99 and his friends as "actors" and his family as "producers." It's one of the most heartbreaking movies I've ever seen, on several levels, and yet uplifting too, because darn if he doesn't get his movies made and shown, despite the enormous odds against him -- which are, by the way, the same odds against all working-class American mooks with aspirations to do something more than mop toilets and deliver newspapers. Of course his movies aren't good, but they're not *terrible* either. He's got a pretty good eye, and I'd rather sit through one of his homemade horror flicks than the pretentious self-absorbed prattle of many a film school grad. Yes, he makes his wives and girlfriends and children and mother suffer for his art, but so did Picasso. Like "Anvil!", I found myself rooting for him like I've never rooted for, oh, Bruce Willis or Tom Cruise or Vin Diesel. A great, fascinating, sad, funny doc that reflects the larger American experience.

These real life characters make me laugh until it hurts and no matter what I do I can't fight back the tears during the last scene. It's hilarious, and inspirational while also being very sentimental and bitter sweet. From year to year I can watch this over and over when I am feeling depressed or when I need a reminder to do what ever it takes to chase my biggest dreams in life. Uncle Bill, Mark Borchardt and Mike Shank I love you all! Thank you for the illumination and making me happy. Why else do we exist other than for the creation and enjoyment of art. God bless. Carpe Diem!

Well worth it. Refreshing and a complete refrain from typical hollywood crapola. Very funny and sad at the same time.

A great mix of 'feel-good' and 'underdog'. And it's all real. One of the greatest midwestern horror cinema documentaries ever made!!
