Description

Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins star in director Francis Ford Coppola's visually stunning, passionately seductive version of the classic Dracula legend. In Bram Stoker's Dracula, Coppola returns to the original source of the Dracula myth, and from that gothic romance, he creates a modern masterpiece. Gary Oldman's metamorphosis as Dracula who grows from old to young, from man to beast is nothing short of amazing. Winona Ryder brings equal intensity to the role of a young beauty who becomes the object of Dracula's devastating desire. Anthony Hopkins co-stars as the famed doctor who dares to believe in Dracula, and then dares to confront him. Opulent, dazzling and utterly irresistible, this is Dracula as you've never seen him. And once you've seen BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, you'll never forget it.

this version of Bram Stoker's classic novel has got to be the worst ever. total garbage. Stoker never once lead us to feel any sympathy for Dracula. he is a vicious monster of the first order bent on aniallation of the the whole human race. this trash of a Coppola's attemps to portray this ultimate villain as some sort of hard done by sorrowfull soul filled with passion and even more absurdly... compassion. complete rubbish. stands to prove Hollywood can ruin anything. really i could puke.

Except for pleasing visuals and brilliant camera work, this movie is an utter disaster. I’d call it a train wreck, except you’ll desperately need to look away. The story is disjointed and incoherent. It’s obvious many key details were left on the cutting room floor. All made worse by terrible writing. You can tell these actors are struggling with their scripts as much as faking their characters’ accents. Not even the hope of seeing another bare breast is enough to soldier on. If you’re curious about the good parts, watch behind the scenes footage on YouTube. All that being said, it’s still a better movie than the Star Wars sequels.

This is one of the best movies ever. Star studded cast. I think this is Gary oldmans best performance, he has to play multiple different characters in the movie.

Although it betrays it’s spatial limitations and veers on inducing claustrophobia at times, Coppola’s ambition to create the film entirely on sets yields some beautiful production designs. He wanted to film black backgrounds and instead focus on ornate costume design and that explains the meticulous attention to wardrobe as well. Unfortunately the story is driven by an unconvincing doomed love story populated with mostly not very compelling characters. The biggest sin is that it isn’t remotely scary. Dracula is flamboyant here but not at all menacing. He’s a tragic romantic in this interpretation which ironically otherwise follows the events of the novel more closely than any other adaptation. But fundamentally changing the character motivation makes the finished product fairly pretentious, devoid of urgency and drenched in overwrought melodrama when it should be desperate and intense. Still the acting is committed and the memorable score goes a long way to create atmosphere. The Annie Lennox song is a good addition as well. There isn’t a two and a half star option so I’ll round it up to three.

I’ve watched this on DVD, Blu-ray, satellite TV, VHS in 1995 & now I own it in digital format. I wish I could’ve seen it when it was first released in theaters, I was only 2 years old at the time :( I really love the production value that was put into this film, minus the portrayal of Harker. Gary Oldman’s Dracula gives me an insight of a man sworn to evil, because his love for a woman has caused him so much pain that he rips any shred of humanity left in him. Also, the haunting composition by Wojciech Kilar is my favorite film score of ALL TIME. I wish the music from the climax of this film was included in the soundtrack. I admire Coppola’s use of original movie tricks for this film
