Description

Amir is a young Afghani from a well-to-do Kabul family; his best friend Hassan is the son of a family servant. Together the two boys form a bond of friendship that breaks tragically on one fateful day, when Amir fails to save his friend from brutal neighborhood bullies. Amir and Hassan become separated, and as first the Soviets and then the Taliban seize control of Afghanistan, Amir and his father escape to the United States to pursue a new life. Years later, Amir – now an accomplished author living in San Francisco – is called back to Kabul to right the wrongs he and his father committed years ago.

The Kite Runner is a beautiful movie! Most of the dialog is in Dari which is a language spoken in most parts of Afghanistan like Kabul which is the location the film mostly takes place in. Khalid Abdalla who I know from United 93 did a great job playing Amir as an adult. The kids who played Amir and Hassan as children were good in the respective roles. The kite fighting scenes were fantastic and the music was great!!! I am not going to say anything about the controversial rape scene that put the children into hiding for their safety but it is a great movie!!!!

No matter which you do first, watch the movie or read the book, the story is amazing. I am about to read the book for school but I have just watched the movie, and the book will probably be better than the movie, but it is such a good story. For sure a must watch.

This was a good movie. The only "however" is if you've already read the book, it pales in comparison. They made some changes, which seem minor, but to me are pivotal to the story-telling. Like I said, still a good movie, good actors, moving story. You should watch it and then read the book, or maybe the other way around...
  • This is not for the tender hearted.

It was only months ago that I saw this movie and I had read the book before (like two years prior). The book is well wrtitten in regards to the time periods as to what happened. That's a given considering the author himself was born in Afghanistan. Which is quite a different world in comparison to the Western World culturally. However with the film ( from reading the book ) there were parts protrayed within the movie which increased the emotional strength visually where the written narrative could not. Especially towards the End!!! OMG seriously I was crying so hard due to the consquences of the government upheaval of Afghanistan after the Soviet attempt. In particular the plot twist between the relationship of Hassan and Amir ( Ugh it's so hard to not spoil it >.< ). As well as Amir's trip back to Afghanistan. I shall highlight this particular part of the movie, since I believe there is an importance given the culture differences between the West and the Middle East. The protrayal of the Taliban in my opinion is highly detailed and wonderfully so. While there are currently "religious issues" between the west and the Middle-East, this film in particular highlights the terrorism factor and it is important to understand the Taliban are not just after foreigners like Amir. It does not matter what a person thinks or believes if it does not fall into what the Taliban believe or follow then one becomes the enemy. Since there are some scenes where punishments against "violators" of Islamic Law takes place. As well as another thing which I found intersting was the clothing differences between the people who were submissive to the Taliban, and how the Taliban were clothed in general. P.S. I think the person from the NYT was having a bad day. That or he hasn't seen Treeless Mountain... (which from what I have seen on the reviews is a very good movie.) When it comes to Minimalistic Film. Heck there is such a thing called Minimalistic Art. Geez. Or Forgot this film is not a 100% Bourne Film ( Sadly I have fallen asleep for 5 minutes in the third one...too much motion Stimuli for my eyes.). Some things don't need to be Flamboyant to get their point across to the Audience.

Very touching. All those who said the book was better and this sucked, a movie can't ever capture the whole book. The book is 200-300 some pages long and they have to squeeze all that into 2 hrs. They've done a excellent job of doing that.
