Description

A pointed political satire, Duck Soup is the Marx Brothers' funniest and most insane film. Groucho is Rufus T. Firefly, the hilarious dictator of mythical Freedonia. Harpo and Chico are commissioned as spies by Groucho's political rival, the calculating Trentino (Louis Calhern). The film contains many of the Brothers' famous sequences: the lemonade stand, a masterpiece of slow burn; the Paul Revere parody; the "We're Going To War" number, a beautiful spoof of '30s musicals; the hilarious mirror scene; and a final battle episode that has been copied by everyone from Woody Allen to Mad Magazine.

I've adored the Marx Brothers movies all my life--Each movie, the brothers switch around playing on different sides, different occupations, but always bringing their crafted personas and diverse humors to each film. Superb Performers, great slapstick, hilarious wordplay, poking fun at contemporaries of theirs and historical blunders, and of course--all are great musical acts seperate and together. C'mon ITUNES, lets do Cinema a solid and throw together a batch of these at a good price--Duck Soup, Night at the Opera, Animal Crackers, Horse Feathers, Monkey Business, Coconuts, Day at the Races, Go West--you bundle em' together, and I'll chuck in the Dough!--DEAL?

Though the run time is short, this movie is dense with its comedic content. Most movies have plenty of scenes that are just filler. Duck Soup just doesn’t have any filler. It’s almost full throttle from beginning to end. If you are a film buff, you will find as you watch Duck Soup, just how many other film makers have borrowed from it. I am so glad I watched it, finally!

The Marx Brothers made very funny movies and this one should be considered their best by all. But I understand why it's not by some. This movie was so far ahead of it's time comedy wise that everyone copied their jokes. Mostly cartoons took from them! If you like Bugs Bunny, you will love this movie and all of their movies. Beware some of their humor was stolen by others after this movie so you have already seen some of this in one form or another. Airplane, 1 & 2; Bugs Bunny; Patty Duke; Lucille Ball ( who co-starred in one of their movies); Woody Allen; and many more have paid homage to the Marxes by doing their routines. The "mirror" routine was first done by the Marx Brothers and even though you saw it before they still have a couple tricks you have not seen! Their very best films overall (they are all funny) are Duck Soup; Animal Crackers; A Night At The Opera; Monkey Business; Horse Feathers; A Day At The Races; and Go West (which has the song: Lydia, the Tatooed Lady). But Duck Soup has a little of everything to enjoy. The production values improve as you go from earlier to later films. So MGM movies look better than Paramount films but that's probably because film and audio techniques were just beginning to be used a few years before they even started making movies. But considering the technical limitations they are funnier than movies like Animal House and Old School which had all the modern advantages of location shoots and trickery and of course 100 years of filmmaking behind them as well as funding. Once the Marx Brothers catch hold of you, they don't let go and soon you forget how hold the movies are and just laugh at how sometimes the more things change, the more they stay the same. Remember they were at their peak during the great depression between two "wars to end all wars". If you want the quick overview check out The Marx Brothers in a Nutshell. It's a career overview.

If you only ever buy one Marx brothers movie in your lifetime this is the one worth every buck. I can think of no other movie comparable to this one except perhaps "Quest for the Holy Grail"
  • One of the Funniest Movies Ever Made in the History of Cinema!

The Marx Brothers. The Original Kings of Slapstick Comedy and practically the inventors of it. The Marx Brothers have made four of the most funniest movies ever made inlcuding Hores Feathers, A Day at the Races, Monkey Business, A Night at the Opera (their second funniest film) and of course Duck SOup, their funniest film ever made. At that time, Duck Soup was a flop for Paramount and nearly bankrupted them. Do not let that fool you. Duck Soup is considered one of the funniest movies ever made in the history of Cinema and is in the top 10 on AFI"s 100 Years 100 Laughs, The Funniest Movies of all Tim next to classics such as The Producers, Blazing Saddles, It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Tootsie, Ghostbusters, and of course Some Like it Hot, the funniest movie ever made. The Marx Brothers were a comedic force that took the world by storm with Groucho and his insult comic getup, cigar and grease mustahce, Chico with his forged Italian accent, piano genius and bumbling conman persona and of course Harpo with his mute, hysterical impressions and slapstick routines. Those of you who do not know who the Marx Brothers are, you've missed out on the birth of slapstick and insult comedy, these guys practically invented comedy with the likes of Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and "Fatty" Arbuckle who invented physical comedy. The Marx Brothers are the best comedic duos in the history of cinema and no one will be able to top them in sheer genuis, musical prowress or deliverance, not now, not ever. Long live the Marx Brothers!!!
