Description

The U.S.S. Cygnus is perched precariously at the edge of a black hole -- the vast, empty nothingness where space and time end. Anything that crosses its border enters a universe of the complete unknown. And so begins a story that only Disney's film magicians could tell. A story of robots and humanoids. Of human genius and madness. And a spectacular descent into nature's ultimate mystery -- The Black Hole.

This is definitely a 70’s SciFi - cheesy acting and special effects, but a thought-provoking story line. Not an unusual story, with the madman/genius wanting to explore the unexplorable. Reminded me of The Angry Red Planet. Speaking of reminding of... The opening FX (save the blank screen with music - getting the attendees to finish seating?) were a precursor to Tron, while the ending turned into a Disney/Religioso/Ripoff of 2001 (I knocked it a star for that, plus the broadcasting of character actions - I’m looking at you, Earnest Borgnine). Definitely on a par with the original Star Trek. Gotta love Vincent, though.

It’s a dated movie but very entertaining nevertheless. New generations won’t have any apperception for it but it’s actually a good sci/fi and for the time, it has some very impressive effects to it.
  • Cheesey but I like it.

I know it's kind of a cheesey sci-fi movie, as most of them were from that era. I like this movie because I was a small kid when I first watched it, and I had never seen anything like it before. There was a real sense of excitement, drama and fear throughout the whole movie and it always stuck with me. The story is actually pretty good, even by today's standards, as it has been recycled through many sci-fi movies since then. The robot Maximillian really scared me as a kid, and honestly still has the same aura of cold menace that he had when I was little. If you like early science fiction movies, this is one you need to watch.
  • A classic that stands the test of time

Released on the heels of Star Wars: A New Hope, it is hard not to make comparisons, so I won't avoid it ;) This was very clearly a "darker and edgier" sci-fi space opera made to meet the market demand for movies like Star Wars. And it worked very well in this case. It had remarkably well-nuanced characters and attempted to respect science (rare for a Hollywood movie). Though it sometimes paces slow, that is all part of the build-up to create the sense that something evil is stalking the characters until all hell finally breaks loose in the last half. Is every bit as gripping as I remembered it.
  • It was an end of an era in sci-fi

Those who remember matt paintings as backdrops, models on wires, and stories that require "suspension of disbelief" will know what I'm talking about. Disney's FIRST PG rated movie, and quite honestly, borderline epic. The musical score is perfect. While some can(and have) said that some of the acting was sub-par, I disagree. There are some great bantering scenes between Charlie Pizer and VINCent. Those who are looking for a modern era sci-fi epic will be disappointed. However, if you can remember that this movie was released in 1979(just 2 years after Star Wars), and prior to Star Trek:The Motion Picture, you should enjoy it for what it is. As for the story; iTunes could have done much better with the synopsis. 4 human explorers, along with their robot, returning to Earth after an exploration mission, happen across a Black Hole. Hanging nearby, within the gravity well is another ship. A ship called "USS Cygnus", believed to be lost. In need of repairs, they dock with the ship, and find it's sole occupant(Dr. Hans Reinhart) has developed anti-gravity technology to negate the power of the Black Hole. A seeminly gracious host, Reinhart is hoping to send his technological discoveries back to Earth in hopes of everlasting glory. However, our heros learn that behind this genius lies a dark and deadly secret. The original crew of the Cygnus did not leave the ship, they were reprogrammed by Reinhart to be his will-less slaves. The crew of the Palomino must escape before they suffer the same fate, and Reinhart takes the Cygnus where no one has ever dared to go...... into the Black Hole.

This is one of the worst Sci-Fi movies I’ve ever seen. Wildly scientifically inaccurate, terrible dialogue, and a clunky plot.
