Description

Brad Pitt is Jerry, a low-level Mafia "mechanic" whose ineptitude is countered by frequent bursts of dumb luck. Julia Roberts is Jerry's girlfriend, and she wants him to get out of the business. Before Jerry can depart ways with the mob, he must do one last errand – go to Mexico and recover a rare, valuable, and possibly cursed pistol known as “The Mexican.” He finds the weapon with ease, but making his way back to the States proves to be more challenging, especially when hired hitman Leroy (James Gandolfini) plans to kidnap Samantha until Jerry comes back. Director Gore Verbinski (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN) brings to the screen a unique mix of action-comedy and road-movie chaos in this unpredictable, original hit.

  • Entertaining If You’re Patient

Since there are some homicides in this movie by a crime syndicate, this qualifies as a dramedy. So it’s not for children, and the story progresses in an unexpected way and is definitely one of a kind. Patience will pay off because the movie gets more interesting as it goes along. It’s a bit of a quirky independent film. The script is original and the acting is very good.

Good movie, now I'm looking for the sound track, like that very much.
  • Much better than its rep

Fun, funny, and massively underrated by the critics when it came out, this is a light, mildly Tarantino-inspired farce about an inept criminal (Pitt) and his sometimes lovable, often annoying girlfriend (Roberts). Pitt puts on a full charm offensive, ably backed by the rest of the small but top-notch cast. Yeah, Roberts hits a few Failure To Act moments, but the rest of the time she's a charmer too. Gore Verbinski keeps it all bouncing along to an excellent soundtrack by Alan Silvestri. For whatever reason the critics mostly dissed it at the time, and it's certainly not Classic Cinema, but it's better than its rep and quite enjoyable.

This is the worst movie I watched all the way through. I just kept hoping it would get better. It didn't.

I really like this film! It's not a great movie but is a lot of fun to watch, and the story is really interesting in a quirky way. I think all the characters are very well done. James Gandolfini has a lot more in him than menacing thugs it seems; Bob Balaban more than holds his own as a villain (not bad, in the company of Tony Soprano); The hitchiker, Gene Hakman, the mexican mob, Brads partner all play well, and Brad pitt and Julia Roberts are an adorable couple. The peasant wedding montage adds real texture. Strongly recommended, good entertainment. I bought it.
