Description

Academy Award nominees Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes star in The Duchess: the compelling true story of a lavish world filled with smoldering passion, heartbreaking deception and stifling demands. Beloved by a nation but betrayed by her husband, Georgiana Spencer -- The Duchess of Devonshire and "Empress of Fashion" -- faced an agonizing choice between responsibility and love. This gripping portrayal of England's "It Girl" has won acclaim from audiences and critics alike. She was vivacious. She was heroic. She was The Duchess.

As being a fan of Miss.Knightley I thought I'd take a look at this 18th century period piece about the life of Georgina Spencer, the Duchess of Devonshire. I will admit that I wasn't blown away by it but I did enjoy it quite well. I thought Knightley possessed both poise and grace in her role as the Duchess. Fiennes was good as the stuffy, essentric duke but I fear this man is forever cursed to be typed casted as a villian or quasi villian. Hayley Atwell, really held her own and seemed to slip into Lady Elizabeth's shoes with ease and elegance. It may have been Knightley's movie but there were times between she and Atwell's scenes that it was Atwell who held the audience's attention. Everything is quite lovely about the film. Lovely costumes, lovely people, lovely sets, lovely music, lovely and yet predictable story. I am not certain as to how accurate this is to the real Georgina's life but it still is a nice movie to watch every once in awhile.

At least to students of history, that this movie is drawing a parallel between Georgianna Spencer's life and her future descendant Diana Spencer. Married at a gullible, young age to an older dull aristocrat needing a society broodmare, loved more by the people than her own husband, forced to look for love with others outside the marriage, admired as a fashion plate and social patroness.......yes, Diana Spencer and Georgianna were very much alike.

Keria Knightly has long been one of my favorite actressess, and her portrayl in this film is no exception. If you are put off by period films, then this film might not be for you. The acting is very well done and the setting is believible. The film contains a lot of dialouge, and the overall tone of the film has a romantic, victorian feel to it. I was especially pleased by the films' portayl of the role of women in that time period and how difficult it was to break out of the social order and class system of England during that time period. Overall, a well done and artistic film that deserves a look...

This movie made me cry. It was very witty, had many twists and turns, and has so many parts that lift you up in delight, but then so many dramatic pieces. The costuming for this film was splendid. The hair/makeup and the gowns flowed together and created a luxurious feel. I absolutely loved this movie. i would watch it again and again. A real feast for your eyes.

Such a powerful movie. I was overwhelmed by the emotions this film elicited...I cried at least three times. She was so empowered and brought down at the same time....
