Description

Art School Confidential follows talented young artist Jerome Platz (Max Minghella) as he escapes from high school to a tiny East Coast art school. Here the boyish freshman's ambition is to become the world's greatest artist, like his hero Picasso. Unfortunately, the beauty and craft of Jerome's portraiture are not appreciated in an anything-goes art class. Neither his harsh judgments of his classmates' efforts nor his later attempts to create pseudo-art of his own win him any admirers. But Jerome does attract the attentions of his dream girl, the stunning and sophisticated Audrey (Sophia Myles), an artist's model and daughter of a celebrated artist. Rejecting the affectations of the local art scene, Audrey is drawn to Jerome's sincerity. When Audrey shifts her attention to Jonah (Matt Keeslar), a hunky painter who becomes the school's latest art star, Jerome is heartbroken. Desperate, he concocts a risky plan to make a name for himself and win her back.

I'll admit that if I weren't an art school veteran/dropout myself, I probably would have liked this movie a lot less than I do. I really enjoy Terry Zwigoff's films in general, and I really dig the wry, cynical perspective he brings to them. But what I especially love about Art School Confidential is its portayal of some of the types you'd find studying and teaching there. In my experience at least, this really ain't that far off from reality. So basically, I love this movie because it speaks to my cynicism and past experience. If that's not you, though, I doubt you'll find it very enjoyable.
  • Funny, if you're into art

This is hands down one of my favorite movies....mainly because I think I've met many of the art school cliches in my life. If you're unaware of the cliches, and even some artist references the movie presents, it will not be very funny, and you'll just be confused. Overall I enjoy everything about this film. =D

One of the worst movies ever created. How it managed to suffocate the talent of some pretty exceptional actors is beyond me. Slow-moving, poorly written dialogue, and hardly any comedy at all. Also, it seems like they couldn't afford any music rights because there isn't a soundtrack it desperately needs one. Please don't spend your time or money on this movie.

Those that trashed this movie I need to ask; are you sure that you are talking about art school confidential? I found this movie to be a perfect statement on the pretentious nature of the art world and art critics. I love this movie. I recommend this to all!

I was mildy entertained by the first 2/3 of the movie, but it ends in a flaming tailspin of bad writing. I've never had an ending of a movie so completely rob me of enjoyment.

This movie looked like great entertainment when I saw the preview. I was mistaken. This wasn't the worst movie I have ever seen, but I do not suggest wasting your time watching it.

This movie was horrendous. The plot was ridiculous, the characters were underdeveloped, and any attempt at humor only disguised the fact that this was NOT a comedy. It was a dark film, contrived as "art", when in fact it was just plain bad. If you enjoyed this film, you are as delusional as the characters in it. Wouldn't watch it again if you paid me
  • Definitely a surprise

GivenName, you are so wrong it's funny. Did you even finish the movie? And by the way, John Malkovich was its producer, so of course he chose this movie for a reason. This movie was a bit of a shocker, especially because of the film's interesting twists. It started off hilarious, then veered into sketchy, and ended with beautiful. I loved all the themes it presented and was hit hard by the pure insanity of it. Angelica Huston, although underused, Malkovich, and Sophia Myles were magical and inspiring. Max Minghella's amateur yet highly accurate performance served well. Loved it and recommend it for those in need of an indie lift.
