Description

Carrington is the true story of the tragic relationship between the English painter, Dora Carrington and writer, Lytton Strachey. Between the First World War and the early 1930's, they experimented with a way of life beyond the conventional standards of their time, a life which broke all the taboos of society of their desire to live as freely and honestly as they could. They acknowledged openly what most of us are aware of but still reluctant to discuss: that a great many differences can exist between spiritual love and physical desire.

One of the most deliciously written, directed, and acted movies I have seen. Jonathan Pryce is brilliant: I feel I have now met Lytton Strachey. The rest of the cast is also excellent. Some wonderful jokes, even in the saddest bits. The Quintet is perfect. The American tomato reviewer completely missed every possible point: evidently ill attuned to the native humour and longing for high-speed car chases....a fig for him.

I have seen it called slow by a professional American reviewer. I can only think he has seen to many action films of late. The film is almost like a series of incredible paintings in itself. CarringtonĀ“s artwork is presented well, and the use of the English language is superb. Double meanings of phrases (the scene at the draft board is worth a study all on its own!) Love, spiritual, physical...in several manifestations, and put into the perspective of the time this took place, it was an experiment as daring as my generation in the late 60s. I have now seen it 5 times, sharing it with people I thought would appreciate it and no one has been unmoved, no one has felt it was a waste of their time and no one had a negative view of the acting or story.....although of course some felt they were an immoral lot! Enjoy!

I watched this movie after iTunes suggested it for me in Genius. What a great story. The suggestion brought me to the artist Dora Carrington as I was not familiar with the Artist, and in a most delightful way helped bring some theories in understanding her work. I thought the acting was awesome, and the sets were very beautiful. Perhaps a bit slow at times, but it always has a reason in the end. I think fans of Emma Thompson will not be disappointed, but Jonathan Pryce was absolutely fantastic.
