Description

A career Army sergeant, Gallagher (Gene Hackman) is assigned to transport a prisoner from Berlin to Washington, D.C. When his prisoner (Tommy Lee Jones) escapes, he finds himself in the middle of a deadly conspiracy with masterminds who want him well out of their way. It appears he has gotten himself into far more than he had bargained for, mixed up in an assassination plot of a very high-ranking world figure in order to sabotage arms control talks. Gene Hackman and Tommy Lee Jones deliver spectacular performances in this stylish political thriller. Directed by Andrew Davis.

  • One of the best Cold War thrillers!

"The Package" is one of the best fictional Cold War thrillers out there with a stellar cast and a great screenplay. Gene Hackman, playing a tough top sergeant and his ex, played by Joanna Cassidy, try to stop a plot by renegade U.S. and Soviet military officers to sabotage a nuclear disarmament treaty by assassinating the Soviet leader, a Mikhail Gorbachev look-alike, when he visits America. Tommy Lee Jones, Dennis Franz, John Heard and the rest of the cast are all excellent. Don't be fooled by the substandard trailer in 4 by 3 format both in iTunes and on Apple TV. The film itself is widescreen and of near-HD quality in 1080p on HDTV. It looks just as good as when I saw it in a theater long ago, near the end of the Cold War. Some reviewers have linked this film to JFK conspiracy theories but it isn't; the only similarity is that a patsy is set up. It's a great flick. Don't miss it! (Btw, the description should say "assassination" plot, not "assignation." Totally different things!)

This is a early version of an attempt to explain what happened to JFK and explain how this stuff is possible... Very exciting.
