Description

In the not-too-distant future, some 30 years after the final war, a solitary man walks across the wasteland that was once America. A warrior not by choice but necessity, Eli (Denzel Washington) seeks only peace but, if challenged, will cut his attackers down before they realize their fatal mistake. It's not his life he guards so fiercely but his hope for the future; a hope he has carried and protected for 30 years and is determined to realize. Driven by this commitment and guided by his belief in something greater than himself, Eli does what he must to survive--and continue. Only one other man in this ruined world understands the power Eli holds, and is determined to make it his own: Carnegie (Gary Oldman), the self-appointed despot of a makeshift town of thieves and gunmen. Meanwhile, Carnegie's adopted daughter Solara (Mila Kunis) is fascinated by Eli for another reason: the glimpse he offers of what may exist beyond her stepfather's domain.

I really don’t understand why it’s rated so low. It’s a perfect movie.

I didn't catch this movie until later on this year. I avoided mainly because of everyone giving it a slightly below average rating and I'm just not into average action movies. But it's amazing how low our standards will stoop when we get bored enough. I adore this movie. I had no idea what I was getting into. All I knew was it was a post apocalyptic world where Denzel is slicing and dicing people up with a machette, and for the first 20 or so minutes that's exactly what it is. But one thing that clear right out of the gate was just how gorgeously shot this movie is. The color pallet is incredibly bleak and the hightened contrast took a bit for my eyes to adjust to, but I coulnd't get enough of how original this movie felt just by the shots. It is masterfully directed. The action, too, is magnificently shot and suprisingly quite graphic. Denzel turns in a fantastic performance as Eli and Gary Oldman was magnificent as the chief villain. But what I love so much about this movie is it's story. This isn't your typical post-apocalyptic movie. It presents a not so very far fetched concept of a man guarding a text that could bring humanity salvation with his life and will defend it at great cost. Beautifully shot, magnificently acted, and beautifully written: I'm giving 'The Book of Eli' an A

Great story, great acting, great cinematography, overall very well done. One of the few times you won’t be angry for having bought and or rented a movie.

Five minutes of silence dedicated to watching Denzel hunt a hairless cat.... that’s the opening. I’ve sat through some terrible movies but turned this one off just due to the horrible pace.
