Description

A fact-based thriller about a Michigan housewife, Betty Mahmoody (Sally Field), who has come to the Middle East with her young daughter (Sheila Rosenthal) and Iranian-born doctor husband (Alfred Molina). It's just a vacation, her husband promises. But soon the horrible truth surfaces. Betty's husband is a fanatically religious Islamic and doesn't intend to bring his family back to America...ever. Locked in the house, Betty pretends to embrace her husband's faith and persuades his family to allow her enough freedom to go to the market. There she meets an Iranian who is not totally possessed by his faith and who agrees to help her escape with her daughter. Based on a book by Betty Mahmoody and William Hoffer.

One of the times I fear going to some of these countries is that I won't be able to get out. But I have to admit, the only reason I looked for this movie was the South Park episode of Terrance and Philip: Not Without My Anus where they do a "spoof" of this movie. Then I read up about it and watched it. Not a bad film at all.

don't bother watching the movie-the book is AWESOME; covers much more than the movie; the movie is awful. horrible acting - and it seems that the movie tries to make the husband a victim of "anti-iranian" rants of americans. excuse me, but I think that americans have the right to show disdain to iranians; that pesky Iranian Revolution has something to do with it.

Excellent! Very moving. Hold onto your seat. Sally Field gives a stellar performance as usual despite the nay-sayers. Alfred Molina is very believable as well. I highly recommend this movie for adults.

I absolutely LOVE this movie. Sally Field is such a wonderful actress...very talented...very genuine. I loved her performance, the concept of the movie, the deliverance of the other actors/ess, and it was an interesting look at how religion in Iran dictates how ones life ought to be. But, this was set in 1984-6. I wonder how much has changed or simply remained the same.

Unfortunately its not the way the used to treat them because they still treat them like that. With that said it was a great movie.

This movie was amazing to say the least. It was also very shocking seeing the way Iran used to be when the psycotic shaw was in power. The single most important thing to remember when viewing this movie is just because there are some heartless people who argue its extremely racist, Betty Mahmoody is simply telling her story through this and it's not meant to create negative images of Iran. Also keep in mind Iran has become a better country over the years. Also the movie is a lot better than how the trailer makes it out to be.
