Description

Richard Chamberlain stars as Australian lawyer David Burton, who takes on the defense of a group of aborigines accused of killing one of their own. He suspects the victim has been killed for violating a tribal taboo, but the defendants deny any tribal association. Burton, plagued by apocalyptic visions of water, slowly realizes his own involvement with the aborigines…and their prophecies.

I first saw this Peter Weir classic when I was quite young and have watched it many times since. It is definitely the best acting Richard Chamberlin ever did. The movie creates a subtle building sense of dread that I think movies like Take Shelter borrow from using anomalous meteorological events to foreshadow potential doom. The world of the aborigines in fascinating and reflected real societal issues in Australia at the time. I can't recommend this film highly enough. It is great!!!!

Who are you? Are you merkerl? My wife hates this film. I love it. So, perhaps it's not for everyone. Peter Weir slowly develops Chamberlain's lawyer character's descent into aboriginal dream-time as he gathers evidence on behalf of his client. Along the way, he encounters an aboriginal shaman who take hims for a legendary being, merkerl (sp?). By the end of the film, it is perhaps apparent that the shaman was right. The appearance of the merkerl does mean the last wave is coming.
