Description

Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely: who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power of the throne were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.

This movie, although modernized and a bit fictionalized, is a wonderful jewel! I am purchasing the cd just so that I can watch the director commentary. I wish I could have had the option to watch it with commentary on Apple. I am now so curious to know what parts of the story were truth and which were fiction. I’m so glad I watched the related and recent Shakespeare documentary before watching this movie. It helped the story to be more believable. I sincerely believe the true identity of Shakespeare is now known and am excited to learn other related facts. I love how this film was stylized just enough to make it lush and exciting. The casting was fantastic. I especially loved the casting for the role of Elizabeth both young and old the Earl of Oxford young and old. I am intoxicated by the Queens & Earl of Oxford’s bedchamber scene. The metamorphosis with words on that scene was spectacular!!! I’ve never encountered words to seem so powerful and go from two to three dimensional in their affect as they had in this scene. Bravo! I’d love to have seen more interpretation of the Earls life and inspiration for writing, especially his time in Italy. I feel this is a major missing link in this film. I could easily consume several seasons of the Earls life presented in episodes. I hope that is forthcoming. What a wonderful, deeper, eye opener that would be! Thank you to the creators of this work for most publicly giving credit where I believe credit was due.

Not even the type of movie I’d watch, but I’m glad I settled on this one. It’s a “GREAT” movie. Original and very moving...

Quite superb! Anonymous is definitely a good film for any occasion. The superficial storyline is incredible while the historical relevance and artistic perspective adds depth to the film. The imagery of Shakespeare's work is brought to life in this riveting ensemble of artistic expression.

I watched Last Will. & Testament before watching this movie, and I'm so glad that I did. The PBS documentary explains the rationale behind the idea that the 17th Earl of Oxford was the real author of the works attributed to William Shakespeare, who may have "sold" his name to provide cover for the Earl. Once you have that backstory, the movie Anonymous makes more sense. I'm sure I would have been as confused as some of the other reviewers who gave this movie only 1 star if I had watched this movie cold. Having said all that, I give this movie a solid 5. This story should be part of every grade school curriculum on the history and works of "William Shakespeare."

Quite wonderful and still full of wonder creativity vision mystery and imagination! Meaning more than at first glance, you will find it! They say there are two sides to every story, yet they do not mention that there are many stories within every story… To the Dreamers, this will enLighten you. To the visionAires, this will open your eyes - if not now, than later

CameronReese96 obviously didn't watch the whole movie because if they had they would have noticed the multiple plot twists at the end. This was amazing! Probably not factual but I'll let the history buffs fight out the identity of Shakespeare another time. Great acting and beautifully shot scenes. I've seen it twice and loved it both times.

Why is this not available for rent? Really would like to watch it but not for this price.

I stopped watching mid-way through because I didn't get what all the fuss was about. Why does an aristocrat need to hide behind a no-name writer to get his ideas across. It's not compelling enough to warrant a conspiracy theory, much less treatment in a film. The modern theater narration portion made the film look even less sophisticated that it pretended to be. The characters were so insigifnicant (and numerous) that I stopped paying attention.
