Description

The film tells the story of the Soviet regime and how the Soviet Union helped Nazi Germany instigate the Holocaust. The film shows recently uncovered archive documents revealing this. Interviews with former Soviet intelligence officers reveal shocking details on: The Great Famine in Ukraine (1923/33); the Katyn massacre (1940); the SS-KGB partnership; Soviet mass deportations; and medical experiments in the GULAG. These are just some of the topics covered by this first time documentary film by director Edvins Snore. Based on 10 years of research The Soviet Story was filmed over 2 years in Russia, Ukraine, Latvia, Germany, France, the UK and Belgium. As a result, The Soviet Story presents a truly unique insight into recent Soviet history, told by people once Soviet citizens, who had first hand knowledge of it. The Soviet Story also discusses the impact of the Soviet legacy on modern day Europe. The Soviet Story is a story of pain, injustice and "realpolitik".

  • Could Have Been Great

Unfortunately numerous pieces of interviews and historical footage was in Russian and German and left a huge void in this documentary for someone not knowing English, German and Russian (possibly Ukrainian also). It is an overall important and well done work however the lack of translation, written or verbal, is unimaginable and makes this a 2 instead of a 5.
  • Only made for Russian speakers.

The documentary itself looks very interesting. It’s just that I wasn’t able to understand a single word from the local people since there were no subtitles on non-English languages at all.
  • Must See- but1/4 of it is Russian with no translation

Very frustrating, at least 1/4 of the movie is in Russian with no English translation or subtitles for these parts. Was this a mistake in the iTunes version? Everyone (especially people under 35) should see this documentary, it is that important. Please FIX THIS!!!
  • Learn Russian!

The description fails to explain that the film requires a person to speak Russian! Except for the obvious point that the "soviet story" is a blood thirsty, savage one, much of the content is useless unless a person speaks russian! ADD SUBTITLES IN ENGLISH AND I'LL ADD IT TO MY LIBRARY!
  • So disappointed

I was really looking forward to watching this movie but ended up being very, very disappointed. Half the movie was totally lost for me as I don't speak Russian or Latvian. It's annoying when they show documents in Russian and read them off in Russian and then the narrator says in English "Sounds shocking, doesn't it"...well it sure would if I would understand what they just said. Why are there no subtitles?
  • Great film--- SUBTITLES ARE NEEDED
