And More. I rented this movie first & then I had to buy it because I enjoyed the parts I watched. At the beginning I didn’t have high hopes for the movie so I decided to do some work and have a beer while the movie was playing. I listened and watched a bit off and on and eventually fell asleep. Woke up just as they entered some human refuge volcano. I had a phone call that took up another 15-20 minutes before settling in and watching the last 30 or 40 minutes. It was a great 30 or 40 minutes. I wanted to watch the entire movie after seeing the last part starting where Wanda catches the Doc…Well I won’t spoil the movie. I didn’t get time to watch the complete movie before the Rental was up, so I bought the movie. I have watched it 3 or 4 times now. It’s not a horror movie or anything like Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It’s a a little sad toward the End with a Doctor Feel Good Finisher! If you take the time this movie will surprise you.

I was drawn to this film for some reason, and I did end up liking it. In a way, yes the film is tedious and slow and hoakey. However, there is definitely a soul inside that deadness, and it's name is Saoirse Ronan. Her performance is sweet and endearing and has quite a lot of humanity which for me made up for the general lack-luster and uneven plotting. Also, I happen to enjoy films that are slow but have quiet intensity, and this film certainly has that, helped along by some nice supporting turns by William Hurt and other strong character actors. So rent it, and watch the first 1/3 and if you get through that and forgot why you doubted it in the first place, then I'm quite sure you'll finish it and be happy you did. Ultimately it's message is non-violence and getting along with each other, and lord knows we certainly need that in this world.

I don't know why the critics hate this movie. I think it's quite good, and is a fairly faithful adaptation of the book (which is fantastic). I really dislike Twilight, but this is so much better. It actually has a good story line and decent, likeable characters.
  • A nice escape

What is syfi if not an escape? I think "The Host" was just that, a nice escape into another reality. I read the book and enjoyed it very much. I can't say if I would have liked the movie as much as I did if I hadn't read the book, butI think the actors and set designers did a great job bringing an interesting story to life. Was it Oscar worthy, maybe not, but not every movie is at that level. Sometimes it is nice to escape for a couple hours to another place and get lost in their world.

Perhaps I am a sentimentalist, but The Host is one of the most moving films that I have ever seen. It tells a story of life and sacrifice and so much love. Reading the critics, one would think that we have seen different movies. It tells the story of an invasion of humans by a parasitic species called Souls that joins with its host - US. The merging is quite beautiful. Usually the host is silent, but in the case of Melanie, it co-exists with the Soul named Wanderer and the Wanderer learns what it is to be human. Do not listen to the critics. View the film with an open mind and I hope that you are as affected by it as much as I was.
