So a bunch of bully teenagers are our future? How was this considered a movie worth two additional follow up films?

  • Questionable World-building

Divergent's world-building bugged me for lots of reasons. The most glaring flaw in the system was how the factionless were homeless. Shouldn't they be the ones who become the low-skilled laborers who worked in textile mills, factories, and sanitation? After all, someone has to make the clothes, cook the food, fix the machines, and clean up the garbage. That would've made more sense and provide commentary on how society values special skills and natural-born talent above everything. So those who lack talent are doomed to be a cog in the massive system and slowly fade into obscurity. The sad truth is not everyone can be a genius, be remembered for generations, have statues built for them, be placed in textbooks, or be the world's greatest. The vast majority of people lack talent and thus are stuck in modernity. Also, Tris and Four's relationship would've been more interesting if he was secretly factionless rather than another divergent. Their chemistry would've been more interesting since both would be considered outsiders for different reasons. Overall this is a typical YA dystopian. You've read/watched one, you've read/watched them all.

First off, I’d like to say that I really enjoyed this movie. It had a decent plot and a few decent actors to carry the movie through its 2 hr. 19 minute run time. Unfortunately, there were instances where this film left me wanting more dialogue/interactions between certain characters. There were also instances where I wished certain characters had more screen time and that others had less. I know that filmmakers and casting directors can’t please everyone, but I felt like the actor who played four (Theo James) did a terrible job. There were times where you can see him literally gritting his teeth to make it through his lines and there are other times where Theo’s expressions and 90 % of his lines make me wonder if he took acting lessons from a robot and that’s what he’s holding his standards up to. It feels like throughout the film we are barely scratching the surface with him and I think he needed more light hearted moments to show he was actually a good person deep down. It’s not that I think he’s ugly or that he’s a terrible person. He actually seems very nice and lots of people find him attractive. I just can’t like him as an actor and here is why- He delivers his lines in such a weird and seemingly painful way and that isn’t fun or entertaining to watch. Now, before the girls that love Theo try to tell me “he’s supposed to look like he’s in pain because of his horrid childhood” , I’d like to remind you that he’s supposed to have a lighter side to him as he gets to know Tris and I don’t think he did a good job conveying that at all. I will list a few characters that I liked, because I think it’s good to find something positive about a film that had some disappointing moments. I liked Tris (Shailene Woodley) because she’s the main character and I wanted to find things to like about her for that reason. Also, after watching her in this film I’ve decided that she is a great actress and I think she was cast extremely well. I liked Christina (Zoe Kravitz) because I could feel her emotions through the screen and I’d like to see Zoe in more films as she grows an as actress because I really liked her performance. I liked Peter (Miles Teller) because he was engaged with his character and he came across as one of the biggest creeps ever and that is exactly how he was supposed to seem. There was no grey area with him because he played his character well and he didn’t try to change his character. He just said his lines with the right amount of disgust, aggression, and anger and it ended up working out really well. I will say that I’m not “endorsing creepy men” (in case it came across that way) and that I definitely don’t support men who are that rude and annoying. All I’m saying is that was the type of character he was playing and I think he conveyed it in a way that allows people to be entertained by him and his character in the film. After watching the film, I discovered Miles’ hatred for this franchise and that he said “I only played Peter to be in mainstream media so more people would notice me”. This makes him sound like a complete jerk and you’ll find that if you google him more things like that will come up. Unfortunately, I think he’s a great actor despite him seeming like a terrible person and if you haven’t seen him in Whiplash please make the time to watch it!
