This is a very quirky little film that is worth sitting through just for the final scene. I have watched that scene a lot this past week. It really works on many levels. I even looked up the guitar chords for the final song on-line! I don’t consider it a comedy even though there are some funny moments in it. The movie does drag a bit in parts, but to reiterate what I said earlier, that final scene is just perfect.

I've watched this movie over and over and over again. It's sad, it's funny, it's so weird - it's brilliant. Michael Fassbender does an incredible job expressing every emotion without us ever seeing his face. Every bizarre scene is perfectly crafted... And the message is lovely. (Mental illness is not the secret to creativity.) I recommend this movie to everyone.

If you like off-tempo, avant garde jazz music or interpretive dance or beat poetry, you might enjoy this movie. Even if you only understand it, consider yourself ahead of the game. The only laughs I found were nervous laughter (because the characters are all seriously mentally ill and it's not nice to laugh about such things) and some quiet chuckles while considering that A) this was called a comedy and B) it was highly rated. Apparently the mentally ill folks who enjoyed it also gave it favorable ratings. I hoped for some funny moments, but they never came. Lacking comedy, I hoped for some poignant observations, but those never materialized either. I wished for a happy ending, but, alas, another disappointment. I watched the trailer and wanted to find some answers. I watched the movie and satisfied my curiosity. Now I know... it's a terrible movie. On the plus side, I only rented a regular definition version, so I only wasted $2.99!

We went into this movie without any preconceptions. We knew it was going to be interesting. We didn’t know how much we were going to like it. It exhausted us by the end, but in the same way a roller coaster takes your breath away. Maggie Gyllenhall… I think this was my favorite of her performances. Her character was not easy to like and she played it beautiffully. Every character, a joy to watch as the story unrolled before us. Another movie that we were still thinking about days later. The music is still in my head a week later.
  • Brilliant movie.

Spend the $4.99. It’s a profound steal. One of the best movies I’ve seen to date (and in this day and age THAT is a massive accomplishment). Wish I had bought it, not rented!

One of the worst movies I have ever seen. The previews paint the picture of potential comedy based on the whole giant head thing, but you spend the whole movie waiting for that special moment that never happens. I'd rank this up there with the "Tree of Life" as one of the worst I've ever seen.
  • First off, temper your expectations.

This is not at all like “Spinal Tap”, if that’s what you’re hoping for. This is a movie about the music biz, but more than that it’s a movie about mental illness as it plays out in a band and its members. It’s not real uplifting, but it IS really thoughtful and well done.
  • People just don't get movies

I hate when people say that this movie is bad because it's strange. THAT IS WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS MOVIE. Well not just that the witty humor, originality, and emotion also make the movie awesome. Take a few notes people. This is what movies should be like!

For those who can’t see the story here? Too bad. This is a magnificent movie. I loved it from start to finish. Truly original, excellently acted, difficult to pull off yet they did it beautifully. WHAT is not to love about this movie. I find that American’s have crappy taste. Euro movies are generally what I stick with. Most Americans don’t like plot development, they don’t want to participate and use their own brains, they don’t see beyond their OWN story. That’s too bad. I agree with the critics on this one, usual, but this movie deserves respect.
