Description

Mark Landis has been called one of the most prolific art forgers in US history. His impressive body of work spans thirty years, covering a wide range of painting styles and periods that includes 15th Century Icons, Picasso, and even Walt Disney. And while the copies could fetch impressive sums on the open market, Landis isn't in it for money. Posing as a philanthropic donor, a grieving executor of a family member’s will, and most recently as a Jesuit priest, Landis has given away hundreds of works over the years to a staggering list of institutions across the United States. But after duping Matthew Leininger, a tenacious registrar who ultimately discovers the decades-long ruse and sets out to expose his philanthropic escapades to the art world, Landis must confront his own legacy and a chorus of museum professionals clamoring for him to stop.ART AND CRAFT starts out as a cat-and-mouse art caper, rooted in questions of authorship and authenticity – but what emerges is an intimate story of obsession and the universal need for community, appreciation, and purpose.

I hope the stay at home douche bag does pass on his inability for self reflection.

This film was so well done that I had to rent it twice! I thoroughly enjoyed the entire movie. The views from the perspective of Landis and the art world really helped tell the story very well.

A really concise, beautiful, and hilarious portrait of two men, at once adversaries and then friends. Really well edited, and thought out. The camera always seems to be in the right place at the right time. One of my favorites of the year!

This is one of the most intriguing films I've seen in years. Not only is it fascinating to learn about how and why an art forger donated his copies of masterpiece paintings to museums for years (never making any money from his forgeries), it's also interesting to discover how and why the "experts" accepted the forgeries into their collections. This film will keep you thinking for days!! Mark Landis, the forger, shares his life with us, shedding light on one of the longest and most interesting art capers of this century . The filmmakers have captured a bizarre story and have made it into a truly memorable film, with wonderful story telling, great camera work, superb editing, and music that hits the spot. I highly recommend this film.

This movie goes into the minds of an art forging schizophrenic and an obsessed art dealer trying to catch him. I know Mark personally and he is a sweetheart with the best intentions. Google his website and you can pay him to create a painting of any picture you want!
  • up yours, art world!

saw this movie when it came out in theaters and really dug it. landis is such a fascinating character, and the way the filmmakers capture both sides of the action (the forger and the guy chasing him) makes the documentary feel more like a thriller with comedic moments. ‘thomas crown affair’ meets 'catch me if you can'?
  • A thoroughly entertaining, fun doc

Mark Landis, the art forger, is probably the most compelling, odd and original subject to base a documentary around. The cat and mouse between Mark and Matt, the OKC art registrar obsessed by stopping him, is wonderfully fun to watch. Highly recommended.
