Almost every frame is a beautiful composition, worthy of Turner himself. Nice picture of 1850s Britain, the art world, and the emerging sciences and industrialization. A very unique individual.
  • Miscast - uninteresting

I really wanted to like this movie. I generally love foreign, indie and international films. I also like films about art and artists. But for some reason I couldn’t get into this film. I watched for 30 minutes and then turned it off. It’s a movie, not a book. It should get your attention within the first 30 minutes. I found the English accents very thick and difficult to understand. Also, the haughty English “stiff upper lip” Victorian theme was a real turnoff. I believe that Mr. Turner was miscast. He doesn’t look like any of the historical self portraits Mr. Turner made of himself. To me this movie came across as a bunch of old codgers who were artists. I wish they had been able to create a more interesting script with Mr. Turner as a young man making his way as a painter not as an old crusty codger. I don’t think J.M.W. Turner would have liked the way he was represented in this film.
  • Disappointing for Turner fans

My wife and I are both big Turner fans, loving his work at the National Gallery in DC and elsewhere when we travel. But we are sorry to have watched this movie. First, it was hard for us to make out the low, mumbling dialog — we were straining to understand the words. Then, there was the lack of narrative drama. It was like (excuse the metaphor…) watching paint dry. Sure, I understand this may be “how life is” or “how England was”. And not all films have to be fast-paced; two of my favorites are 2001 and Koyaanisqatsi. (Many of my wife’s favorites are similarly slow-moving English historical costume dramas such as “Room with a View” and “Howard’s End.”) But aside from the cinematography, everything else was a big disappointment … sorry, JMW!

I was looking forward to watching this film. I thought I would learn something about art and this artist. I felt it dragged on, the character grunted, thru mot of e film, I really didn't feel it showed lot of art , but mostly his life, with some scenes I think it could of done without. It was not worth my money
  • Visually Beautiful … Pretty Boring

Visually, this movie is stunning. The angle of the shots, the use of light, the colors, the overall scenes … simply gorgeous. The story? Pretty boring … my wife and I kept watching and kept watching because we kept thinking “at a 98% on RT, clearly something is going to pull this story all together and will become clear in just a little while”. Sadly, the connecting moment never comes. It is instead lots of independent scenes which are themselves sadly disconnected in a way that just makes it … well boring.

It is an amazingly beautiful movie that is very impactful. If you don't like sad endings then maybe this one isn't for you. It is wonderful.

Movie expects you to already know about Mr. Turner and to be able to understand their difficult to understand regional English mutterings....wanted to embrace it but hung on only since I had paid for it. Pick something else. Visually interesting.

It’s not that this movie isn’t well done artistically, it is extremely well done, but it is just BORING!!! I do mean boring! Sorry!

I loved every minute of this film … the juxtaposition of the beauty of nature brilliantly captured by Turner (and Mike Leigh) versus the hardships of life, of the working classes
