From the imagination of Wizarding World creator J.K. Rowling comes the Fantastic Beasts film series, magical adventures set before the time of Harry Potter. At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

I wasn't entirely clear what was going on over the long run time of this movie or why. The plot seemed very contrived. Most of the movie was exposition which is really the mark of a terrible movie. Having plot elements explained instead of revealed is a cheap short cut of bad movie makers. I fell asleep a few time watching it which may explain my confusion. The Deathly Hallows, by contrast, kept me wide awake and interested. I also had no idea what the baby swapping bit was all about and I didn't care. I understand that the hard core Harry Potter fans are going to love it no matter what. Certainly Harry Potter has a big enough fan base to sell a bunch of tickets. But so does Star Wars and look at the disaster the recent movies have been. In regard to this movie, it is proof that you can take hundreds of millions of dollars, fantastic actors, wonderful special effects, and mountains of good will from the fans and squander it all. Maybe they should have hired a competent writer or two to sort it out.

The Crimes of Grindlewald is a disappointment of a series that killed the harry potter brand and franchise. Whatever this movie tried to capture failed so hard that this movie is funny and over the top stupid. The visual effects are bad and the acting espically oh my god it's hailriously bad.

Yes it confusing if you haven’t seen Harry Potter movies or don’t know anything about Harry Potter(or Fantastic Beast). If you have seen these series then you should understand it fine.

What in the WORLD do people expect from entertainment these days --- PERFECTION or nothing at all apparently ... it's a MOVIE! it's entertainement --- and it was GOOD! I LOVE the beginning - I LOVED Jude Law and sure there were parts that were, silly, but it's NOT all that easy created a monster scene from a BOOK meant for IMAGINATION and get it on a screen to satisfy the entire world and their OWN imaginations....clearly some people don't have ANY imagination - hence the LAME dissapointments ... so be it to them, but both these are great - get the books too! :) Humanity and its demands are getting out of hand.... it doesn't HAVE to be SUPER spot on with ALL the WORDS and Harry Potter connections....... ugh...... ESP if you're a reader you'll DISCOVER things ... that's life.....discovery!
  • Wonderful Depth

This is my first ever movie review because I can't comprehend the bad revewis on this movie. I adore the HP books, the movies are just okay they loose the depth and complexity of JKs narratives. Perhaps the bad reviews on these movies are not avid readers & aren't in touch with the complexity of these characters?? Fantastic Beasts are like HP for adults & JK's narrative on human nature shines with its nuiance and complexity. She creates a world where we question the "others" the people we judge, the people society labels as black and white. She takes you in and shows you instead of black & white it's all grey not one way or another. Heroes have shadows Villains have, or had light that had been shuttered. Beautifully done and doen with purpose, even big climatic scenes have such sweeping undercurrents of human nature. The bad reviews must miss these complexities I cannot think of another explanation. Beyond that the actors are superb and seem to understand the beauty of the characters and execute it so well. JK is a wonder & true talent of our time! Makes me wish so badley these were sweeping novels but I will throughly enjoy this franchise instead.
