Description

Academy award winning director and master storyteller james cameron journeys back to the site of his greatest inspiration - the legendary wreck of the titanic. With a team of the world's foremost historic and marine experts and friend bill paxton, he embarks on an unscripted adventure back to the final grave where nearly 1,500 souls lost their lives almost a century ago. Using state-of-the-art technology developed expressly for this expedition, cameron and his crew are able to explore virtually all of the wreckage, inside and out, as never before. With the most advanced 3D photography, moviegoers will experience the ship as if they are part of the crew, right inside the dive subs. In this unprecedented motion picture event, made especially for imax 3D theatres and specially outfitted 35mm 3D theaters across the country, cameron and his team bring audiences to sights not seen since the sinking 90 years ago and explore why the landmark vessel - more than any shipwreck - continues to intrigue and fascinate the public.

  • Stunning 3D Treat by James Cameron

ATTENTION: this is only a review for the 3D effects and not actually the film itself. We’re going to break down the 3D effects of Ghosts of the Abyss Cinemablend style. In case you don’t quite know what that is, it means we’re judging the 3D based on 7 criteria that are each worth 5 points if it makes full marks in that criteria. The higher the end score, the better for it. So let’s get started. (This is only for the Blu ray 3D version and not the theatrical version) Does it fit? 5/5 Yes. Absolutely. The deep sea exploration of the Titanic along with the stunning views of the sunken ship make for an excellent treat for the 3D format. And with James Cameron behind the production along with the native 3D (not-post concerted), you know you’re in for a great 3D ride. Planning and effort 5/5 Once again, with James Cameron and the use of native 3D in practically every scene, you know the planning and effort has been taken to the max. There’s no way that this can go wrong. Before the window 5/5 The films strong point lies in beyond the window. But the before the window element is just as well taken advantage of. There are underwater specks of dust and particles, the parts of Titanic protrude the screen, and even underwater equipment like a robot arm do their best to reach out into the audience. One note I will point out, however, is that since this was done with native 3D, some of the items protruding the screen ended up being so separated that my eyes just simply couldn’t focus on them. But those items do protrude the screen nether the less Beyond the window 5/5 This is where Ghosts of the Abyss makes it so you can absolutely not watch it without 3D. Underwater, the Titanic is absolutely tremendous. The depth given to the picture allows your eyes to be absolutely drawn in to the massive ship and it’s details. The 3D here brings the Titanic to light in an incredible way. This here is an example of how 3D actually makes the content of the film better. Brightness 5/5 Underwater, things can get dark pretty fast. But luckily, with the proper lighting and planning and effort, Ghosts of the Abyss never allows the darkness to become an issue. Glasses-off Test 5/5 The glasses off test basically says this: When you take your glasses off during a 3D movie, the more blur there is, the more 3D you’re getting. In addition to being natively shot in 3D, the way the image looks without the glasses with only so much blur makes this film a 3D treat. Audience Health 4/5 As I said earlier, due to the enormous separation of the before the window elements, my eyes had trouble focusing on the image. As a result, I would get some eye strain from time to time. But other than that, I left feeling fine. Conclusion 34/35 Ghosts of the Abyss not only a must for anyone who likes the Titanic, but also a must for any 3D fan. Every aspect of the Titanic is brought to light with the incredible 3D depth. If you are considering watching this in 3D, do so. You will not regret it in the least.

When I was young, this was still a lost ship... and a major topic of interest for me. I've read almost every book and seen every movie. Of the movies, both documentary & fact-based fiction, this is among the worst. It feels to me like they produced this to sell off the legendary ship, with very little real content to add. This documentary feels overly dramatized. Worse still, is the up-beat music they keep playing at what should be fairly somber moments. Ugh. My one and only praise, is when they take video of the wreck underwater, turning the time back to something more recognizable and adding the "ghosts", passengers as you would have seen them walking the decks, halls and staircases... before the ship sunk to its final resting place.

Has "some" clips from 1997 movie in it, which is the only reason why I bought it......anyway, not a bad movie, but I wish they would put the 1997 movie from James Cameron on iTunes, but buy this movie if you're a titanic fan!

I am a huge fan of the story of the Titanic. Not a fan of Cameron's. While the overall footage was good I feel very strongly that there was a very disturbing lack of respect or reverance for the lost souls on board this doomed ship. Cameron comes off only as an arrogant person with too much money. While he's making cliche' remarks ie: "rock and Roll", "see you on the bottom", he makes no remarks regarding the poor people that perished in one of the worst disasters in history. The wreck of the Titanic is after all a grave for some 1500 people and should be treated as such. His lack of compassion combined with his arrogant, alloof attitude ruined what could have been if not fantastic, at least a very good, interesting film.
