Description

Superstar Will Smith gives the performance of his career as boxing legend Muhammad Ali in a visually amazing epic drama from Academy Award® nominated director Michael Mann. Muhammad Ali thrilled the world with his ground-breaking boxing victories in the '60s and '70s. But the man behind the legend is grappling with a tumultuous romantic life, his deeply held religious beliefs and the pressures ofstaying on top. A quick-witted, winning personality and strong friendships with close associates, including renowned newscaster Howard Cosell (Golden Globe® nominee Jon Voight), help Ali "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee." But faced with a life-changing conflict outside of the ring, the famously opinionated boxer is forced to rely on the one person he knows the best: himself.

Sometimes you watch a movie and afterwards it feels like you've been somewhere, you feel richer for the experience - this is one of those movies. One of the very best from both Smith & Mann's catalog (and Van Peebles, and Voight, and Foxx... the list goes on). It's Mann, so there are stellar production values along with an excellent soundtrack. As someone else mentioned, there are a few moments where the mix is muddy and lines of dialogue are hard to discern, turned on the captions twice for maybe a minute - and was worth it. Jaime Foxx delivers some real gems & does it well.

Will Smith is an excellent actor, but this did not give much to watch. Ali was so lost with hate that he turns to Islam and gets even more lost. Its a sad story of an arrogant man. It makes one not be able to stand the guy. It shows there was racism then and hate cannot fight hate as MLK said.

  • Very strange editing and post

This film has all the content needed to be an excellent film but it comes off as being very odd. The background music was frequently so loud you could barely make out important dialogue and the editing was weird. Smith does a good job in the role and the other performances are pretty good. It was all shot to pieces in post. Director Michael Mann (best known for his Miami Vice TV show) did a great job with the Miami Vice film, but he blew it with Ali. Too bad. If he had kept it together in post production, this film could have been the greatest.

I have this on VHS. Loved watching Ali fight and Will Smith did a really good job as best anyone could playing Ali. If there was ever a boxer like Ali- I'd start watching boxing again. For me when he retired the sport wasn't the same. Highly recommend this to all ages & especially to those to young to remember how great a fighter in and out of the ring this gentle man was. 🐝👊🏿👍

The single most under rated film of my generation. Genius directing. Genius soundtrack. An all time classic performance from the headline actor. Should be required viewing for anybody interested in American history.
