I’m sick of this version!!! I can’t believe how awful and crusty this version is! The original is a masterpiece…. I don’t even know what this blob of a mess is!

Don’t listen to the naysayers, the Director’s cut is the definitive version that was meant to be seen. I’ve seen both versions and prefer this one.

"The Last of the Mohicans" is a thrilling, fierce adventure movie tempered with attention to historical detail, melodramatic emotion, and a sympathetic tense depiction of the French and Indian War era. Hawkeye a white man who was adopted by the Mohicans, finds himself on a perilous journey to escort a couple of British sisters to their father's fort. This journey brings him, and his companions, into conflict with Magua, a sadistic Huron warrior seeking revenge on the girls' father. This movie is an epic adventure and romance set against the panorama of a frontier wilderness ravaged by the French and Indian War. It focuses on the plight of three totally different civilizations (The English, The French and the Native Americans) with their battles for the continent of North America. Director Michael Mann brilliantly captures the essence of the 1750's era with the hand-to hand battles, the scalpings and the harsh life in the wilderness. The action scenes are quite realistic and border on being enormously powerful. The scenery of the filming locations in old-growth forestlands and mountains in North Carolina looks beautiful and breathtaking. The characters are colorful and have a lot of personality. The casting is superb. The actors and the actresses have done an excellent job for their roles. Daniel Day Lewis gives an excellent performance as Hawkeye, the adopted white son of Chingagchook. Madeliene Stowe was excellent in her role as Cora, Colonel Munro's oldest daughter. Both Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe generate excellent chemistry with rich material for their characters. The performances of the Native American actors, Wes Studi, Russell Means, Eric Sweig and Dennis Banks were very remarkable. This film indeed gives a brilliant look at a certain point in history as one point in a huge timeline. The music score is epic and hauntingly beautiful. A timeless tale of the 18th century frontier and the virtue and tragedy that results when the uniquely different cultures of the French, English, Native Americans, and colonists collide. A perfect mix of adventure, action, drama, and romance. Highly recommended.

The scenes that made the theatrical version beautiful and memorable have been trashed in this director’s version. Please bring this movie back in the theatrical version for download. Pass along to the director and company that they would be making a lot more money if they did. If your reviewers had seen the original, they would know what they are missing.

Terrible ending. Too much killing and death, not enough romance. 😉
  • Don't understand negative reviews for this edition

I was unsure whether to watch this on iTunes, because many of the reviews complained about the 'Directors Cut' which apparently degraded the movie. However this edition is the 'Directors Definitive Edition' and I personally thought it was as good as the original I saw (many times), and I couldn't find any criticism about the Definitive Edition online. All the key points that made the movie very powerful for me are there - the scalping, the Clannad music, the speech by Chingachcook at the end. This version looks great on my large HD tv, better than the old DVD which I have. I rented it because I wanted my children to see it for the first time, and I wanted to make sure the film didn't look aged. It didn't disappoint. What a movie.
