Description

Jack Nicholson and Michelle Pfeiffer star in Wolf, a wickedly funny, wildly romantic, white-knucklethriller. James Spader (sex, lies and videotape), Kate Nelligan (The Prince of Tides), Christopher Plummer (The Sound of Music) and David Hyde Pierce (TV's Frasier, Sleepless in Seattle) co-star in this beastly tale of love and betrayal with equal measures of humor, passion and delicious terror.

Some critics say that monster movies ought to be scary and that this movie falls short of doing that. This movie is set in the modern era, and (in my point of view, anyway) focuses more on how an average man deals with lycanthropy. The hero isn't your usual cop, ex-cop, soldier; he isn't some young good-looking dude with supermodel looks and the body of Adonis. This wolf is a slightly-paunched, slow-moving middle-aged book publisher who just happens to have been bitten by a werewolf one night and begins the slow process of eventually turning into a wolf himself. It's interesting to see how he handles it and how it transforms him, not just physically but psychologically. And Jack Nicholson, I think, was born to play this part! I LOVE this guy, he's one of the greatest actors around! Michelle Pfeiffer is perfect as his would-be lover. The irony of this film is that both she and Nicholson both starred in Tim Burton's version of Batman, and while they were in two separate Batman movies (him as The Joker in 1989's Batman and her as Catwoman in 1992's Batman Returns), their checmistry here is WONDERFUL!!

This is such a great spin on a familiar tale. A must see.

I like that as the wolf is showing itself in Jack's character, he begins to go from a bit submissive to leader of the pack, so to speak. Not super keen on the wolf make-up, as it's a bit on the silly side in some scenes, but the story keeps you watching. I like that the story goes in a different direction other than Jack Nicholson just becoming a wolfman... but I won't ruin it, if you haven't seen it. Definitely worth a watch!

nichols directed the graduate, closer, charie wilson's war, and who's afraid of virgina wolf?. hsi attitude toward women is not always complimentary, but his attitude toward men is even mor cynical. still, he's one of the bst directors of the past century. he is very very good at depicting tension (sxul and otherwise) between men and women. the wolf prt of this is mostly metaphor (but the effects are okay too). the acting is great. nicholson, spader, and pfeiffer are as good as ever 9esp. spader. for spader fans this is a must see). this is not a great film. but you'll watch itall the way through and enjoy and maybe watch it again a few years later. it's a very solid 3 1/2 stars.
