Description

Something evil has taken possession of the small town of Santa Mira, California. Hysterical people accuse their loved ones of being emotionless impostors; of not being themselves. At first, Dr. Miles Bennell (Kevin McCarthy) tries to convince them they're wrong…but they’re not. Plant-like extraterrestrials have invaded Earth, replicating the villagers in giant seed "pods" and taking possession of their souls while they sleep. Soon the entire town is overwhelmed by the inhuman horror, but it won't stop there. In a terrifying race for his life, Dr. Bennell escapes to warn the world of the deadly invasion of the pod people! Remade in both 1978 and 1997, this chilling combination of extraterrestrial terror and anti-conformity paranoia is considered one of the great cult classics of the genre.

Alien invasion via seed pod replicants that serve only their survival. The film is a metaphor for extreme conformity. Is life worth living without individuality?
  • Where's the 1978 version?

I love this movie, but why doesn't iTunes have the 1978 movie? I like that movie just as much as the 1956 movie.

As great 50s scifi goes, this is right up there with the best -- The Thing, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet. It's probably closest to The Thing, in that it's also noirish scifi that's all about 50s paranoia. Very good script, directing, acting -- unusually classy for its era. One of my genre faves.

Out of all the versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers I think that this one is the best. Why? It's the most suspenseful of the versions. The story can actually be applied to today's standards [people say that the anti-communism message is outdated, but I like to believe that these body snatchers represent what happens when a bad idea is given to people it spreads like a wildfire]. Also, the twist involving the doctor's girlfriend is really the creepiest thing I have seen in a 50's film.....period. I won't spoil the plot for you, but you just have to check it out for yourselves. It's just great!

That's it? To me, extremely overrated. Boring. Very shallow storytelling. What is the purpose of the body snatching from the snatcher's perspective? (Snatchees want to be emotionless.) I don't get it.

The original and best verision of the body snatcher movies. More gripping and scary than the one with Donald Sutherland. A must see if you haven't and worth seeing again if you have already.

I've seen both this film and its remakes and this is by far the best version and adaption of the book. Is on the AFIs greatest films list! Superb acting and directing too!

This is a true classic; the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers! This has been redone and copied countless times but none can truely compare to the first one. Absolutely a must for Sci Fi fans.
