Description

This ground breaking detective picture features Isaac Hayes' Oscar-winning theme song and stars Richard Roundtree ("Seven," "Shaft's Big Score") as John Shaft, a street-wise black detective hired to find the beautiful kidnapped daughter of powerful Harlem mobster, Moses Gunn ("Ragtime," "Heartbreak Ridge"). Helmed by award-winning director Gordon Parks ("The Learning Tree," "Leadbelly"), its huge commercial success spawned two sequels and a TV series.

Nothing compares to the original Shaft. The gritty New York city in the early 70s with action. A true original.

One of the greats! Would love it if you'd add "Trouble Man" with Robert Hooks....Another great film. Ya dig!

When I was finishing up my basic training at Fort Dix, NJ in March 1971, "Shaft" was released and I saw it for the first time. For an African American male who was drafted into the service of my "Uncle Sam", this movie gave me a new attitude and a swagger I never had. Those of us who didn't run off to Canada to avoid service embraced Richard Roundtree's performance as John Shaft. That movie saved my life because it gave me a reason to grow up and be a man. As a photojournalist, I got to meet & interact with Richard Roundtree, Isaac Hayes who wrote the score and Gordon Parks, Sr. who directed the film. Game changers all.
