Description

Robert Wise, whose started his directorial career with The Curse of the Cat People (1944), returned to psychological horror for this first screen adaptation of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. Four people (Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson and Russ Tamblyn) come to the house to study its supernatural phenomena. Or has the house drawn at least one of them to it? The answer will unnerve you.

    The one and only original, and all remakes pale by comparison. I have seen this movie hundreds of times and it remains my favorite. Very few special effects because they weren’t needed; the acting and writing and directing are all that are needed to creep you out. Love this movie!

    This might have been a good B movie in the early sixties but to modern audiences it is overwrought and often corny. Examples include a voiceover with reverb, the flightyness of one character and the flippancy of another, and badly done audio effects (again with the reverb). This is not tongue-in-cheek but rather a serious attempt at making a horror movie by an otherwise excellent director who has limited skills at making a horror film. I would definitely advise that others give this movie a pass.

    I saw this on it's original release when I was twelve and remember it was the only time I ever saw saw my dad scream during a movie! The photography, music, acting and sets are all first rate. An absolute classic.

    When this came out over 50 years ago, I thought it was the scariest movie I'd ever seen. It unnerves you with the suggestion of unseen forces. I've seen it dozens of times and I always look forward to the next time that I'll be ready to see it again. It's a keeper.
