Description

The film wends its way through three cities and three tales. The various stories, situated in Paris, Rome, and New York, are, at first glance, all separate, but Haggis effortlessly makes connections among them as the film unwinds, concentrating on three men and their romantic entanglements.

After I watched this movie, I was reminded of one of my favorite movies, an “art film” I saw in 1995 or 1996 in Budapest in a movie theater that featured art films, not Hollywood films. I can’t even remember the name, nor have ever succeeded in finding that film again, but it was about a sound man who shows up at the director’s house in Spain or somewhere in the Mediterranean and records the entire soundtrack based on notes left for him by the director without ever meeting him. I don’t think there was any dialogue. The two films aren’t alike in any way, except the quality of cinematography. The “sound man” film was completely symbolic, while when watching "Third Person” it seems to tell the story of the painfully raw circumstances of the characters in the film, which in the end you realize are really just meant to be symbolic of the deeper theme of both films: trust. Worth watching and for the contemplative mind.

One of those movies that captures you and doesn't let you go until the closing credits. A great cast. Most especially Olivia Wilde, who showed a lot of the emotions that made this movie interesting. This is one of those rare movies, in my opinion, that develops the multiple characters and their quirks and emotional problems. Excellently written and wonderfully acted by an ensemble cast.

I think I understand why some people didn't like this movie. There is an element of taste. I enjoyed it. I found myself looking forward to the development of the characters and eagerly awaiting the connections. It is clever and subtle. The thread connecting the stories may be difficult to spot and I think that is where the negative reviews emerge... the plot is a bit aloof. Nonetheless... really good movie. And the cast is very enjoyable.

What an amazing movie. It isn't just the stellar cast or the marvelous cinematography, this movie really touches people in a way many blockbuster hits can't anymore. The plot line, with all the twists and turns and unexpected links forces viewers to think not just about the characters, but about themselves. This is the only movie I have seen in recent years that I wanted to share with other people afterwards, and also one of the only movies that I wanted to watch again in theaters and take people to. It is not a film for people who aren't willing to think about what they see, or for those looking for fight scenes and cgi effects. This movie is for those willing to be introspective and to pay attention to what is happening in front of them. Well done Mr. Haggis. If six stars were possible, I'd give them.
