Description

Inspired by Chekhov's The Seagull and set in rural New England in the 1980s, Days and Nights stars Allison Janney as Elizabeth, a movie star who brings her paramour Peter (first-time director Christian Camargo) to her lakeside estate to visit her family on Memorial Day weekend. Their eccentric, off-the-wall household includes her ailing brother (William Hurt), her artist son (Ben Whishaw), his ethereal muse (Juliet Rylance), the family doctor (Jean Reno), the estate's custodian (Russell Means), the careless caretaker (Michael Nyqvist) and his wife (Cherry Jones), their temperamental daughter (Katie Holmes) and her long suffering ornithologist husband (Mark Rylance)--the keeper of the sacred land where a bald eagle attempts to raise its young. During the weekend a disastrous turn of events leads the family from dysfunction to heartbreak and, ultimately, salvation.

I was privileged to see this movie at the IFC center screenings where there was a Q&A with the writer and director Christian Camargo. The movie was brilliant. The scenery was picturesque. The all star cast was magnificent. Not one was a standout as they all worked brilliantly together. A must see, again and again. Each time we saw this masterpiece we noticed more and more.

This is the kind of film I will watch many times. The characters and dialogue lingered vividly in my memory for many days. The impact of the film seeps deep into the unconscious as I found myself repeating some of the one liners in my own ordinary world.

This movie is honestly the best movie I've ever seen. The cast line up couldn't have been more perfect and the script was beyond belief. For a small budget this film really went above and beyond. It had you laughing hysterically one moment and crying the next. Such an amazing film and everyone should see it. Saw it on the opening night. Defiantly see this film

What a great movie! The movie was filmed in Connecticut at a lake front property absolutely stunning. William Hurt was brilliant and funny, adorable! Juliet Rylance's character was a breath of fresh air amid the quirky and dysfunctional family. Sometimes I was laughing, sometimes I was holding back the tears. Loved this movie.

If you like to be “in” on an impressive directorial debut, if you love film as an artistic medium - see this film. Mr Camargo has crafted an extraordinary ensemble piece with a eye for arresting cinematography that reminds one of Ingmar Bergman. Impressively, this director/writer also has ear for dialogue and a compassion for his characters that rivals Lena Dunham in its attention to the innate humor and pathos implicit in the angst in all families. The film is gorgeous, funny, and tragic. It has a lot on its mind: America, the family, the environment, romantic relationships, aids, art and the 1980’s. It has a haunting score. This filmmaker is a talent to watch. What a feat to entice this wonderful ensemble of international actors who have plenty of work. What drew them to the project? I’ll bet it was the script.
