Description

Academy Award® winner Tommy Lee Jones "is magnificent" (THE WRAP) in what critics are calling "the best western since UNFORGIVEN" (BBC). When low-life drifter George Briggs (Jones) is rescued from hanging by the strong-willed Mary Bee Cuddy (Academy Award® winner Hilary Swank), he agrees to help her cross the plains by covered wagon, but the stark beauty of the frontier hides constant threats, enemies, and psychological peril. Also starring Meryl Streep, James Spader, and John Lithgow.

  • Slow and boring

This was the worst movie that I have seen from both Tommy Lee Jones and Hillary Swank. It was a tragic waste of two excellent actors. The movie is a slow, boring, waste of time. It was a good concept that was poorly written and executed.

The actors were great but they should have all passed on this script.... I guess if it pays who can blame them, anyway I would save your money and skip this one.

If you want to know what it was really like for those who chose to live in the west, this is as real as it gets. In the early days, men had to travel back east to find a wife. These women had no idea what they were in for, and many of them lost their minds to what was known as, "prairie fever." If you love Westerns but your girlfriend/wife doesn't, this is one movie that may make her change her mind. ;-)
  • Unnecessarily graphic

Great performance by the actors. I feel the movie unnecessarily included some very disturbing graphic scenes. Violence, blood, gore and sex are somethings that are expected in an appropriately rated movie. This movie and story was about a dramatic and sad story of events and situations. For me, two scenes ruined an otherwise great performance of a sad story. I say they were unnecessary because the depth of the situation was already made clear with the rest of the movie. Those two scenes ruined it for us. The two scenes I'm referring to are when one character hurts herself with a sewing needle and when the mother through her crying infant into the outhouse. Both actions were shown clearly! These events of the story could have easily been represented by other means, such as supporting dialog and/or implied by surrounding scenes. I do not recommend this film.
  • Bleak but Brilliant

A bleak story is by no means a bad story. This is a brilliantly crafted and acted exposé of hardship on the American frontier. The West wasn’t a John Wayne movie folks. Get over your need for hero-worship and Disney endings.

Imagine investing your time in a bleak story with no redemption. Characters who are depressing at best, and disgusting and despicable at worst. Overcast and barren landscapes, where no one would want to travel. A story with no point. Enjoy!

I truly enjoyed this movie! I'm so glad that I never put much stock in reviews (mere opinions), otherwise, I would have missed out on a great movie!
  • Freaking awful

Completely pointless and utterly depressing. Also not believable. Are we seriously made to believe that Tommy Lee Jones would turn down Hillary Swank for not being “hot” enough? This movie is staged in the 1800’s-men Tommie Lee Jones age would have been in heaven at the opportunity! The end was probably the worst. If you’re a woman, make sure you watch a comedy after and thank your lucky stars you were not a frontier wife.

Worst movie I've seen in a long time. Unrealistic, turns that don't come close to making sense, and a horrible ending.
