Description

The Americans is a period drama about the complex marriage of two KGB spies posing as Americans in suburban Washington D.C. shortly after Ronald Reagan is elected President. The arranged marriage of Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell), who have two children – 14-year-old Paige (Holly Taylor) and 11-year-old Henry (Keidrich Sellati), who know nothing about their parents’ true identity – grows more passionate and genuine by the day, but is constantly tested by the escalation of the Cold War and the intimate, dangerous and darkly funny relationships they must maintain with a network of spies and informants under their control. Their neighbor, FBI Agent Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) has already come dangerously close to discovering their secret, but was thwarted by Nina (Annet Mahendru), his KGB mole and paramour. Torn between his wife Sandra (Susan Misner) and his deepening feelings for Nina, Stan is completely unaware that the beautiful Russian is actually a double agent, reporting on him to the KGB. Philip has been more successful handling his mole within the FBI, Martha (Alison Wright), assistant to Stan’s boss, Special Agent Gaad (Richard Thomas). Romancing Martha under the guise of one of his cover identities, an FBI bureaucrat named “Clark,” Philip has secured her unquestioning loyalty…by marrying her. Meanwhile, in the Jennings’ house, Paige has become increasingly suspicious that her parents are hiding something.

  • Shallow Russians

I like the show, but I think the presentation of the Russians seems a bit shallow. The main characters just comes off as two American’s who happen to work for the KGB. But it is unclear what their motivation for that is apart from something simplistic like don’t betray the motherland. I would have suspected that while they can see the postive sides of capitalism like consumer goods, they would also comment on the negative sides, like obsession about money and sales. Superficialness. Poverty etc. Except these two KGB officers can’t seem to notice anything but good things about living in America. The only negative is something vague like “I sense a weakness in these people.” Apart from that I think it is an entertaining show. It is kind of exciting with the tensions created by having kids that don’t know that their parents are KGB agents and being best friends with the neighbour who is an FBI agent.

This show brings me back to the days that I lived in 70’s-80’s America and I miss it. Life back then was simpler and the scenes, lingo, music, props, etc are so true to life. Its amazing post 1980 USA Olympics when we as Americans thought we were safe during the Cold War, and yet this movie is a hallmark to the men and women of our government and how they fought against Russian influence which was bred and lived next door to us all! I must say, this show, however, has other intents;that is, showing a couples love, marriage, and attempted dedication to their children and family which really, I believe, is captivating as the spy thriller continues!

The Americans is one of those shows that is just right up my alley. Perfectly casted, this couple are squeamishly alarming to how real deception can be and how even the sweetest neighbors next door could be quivering at the core for your very demise.

the sex scenes reflect the uniqueness of this show in the sense that there are some scenes that make this a cutting edge series. I.e. the violence, sex, nudity, while not being gratuitous, the makers are not afraid to be realistic in concept. I mean look at the toilet scene in the last episode; now that is breaking new ground while remaining true to the realism of the show however faux it may be (did that much killing really go on? I doubt it). But this is entertainment and kudos for not just shoving more of the same old stuff.

I can’t stand this show. This season and last. I watched some episodes from the pilot to the most current show. It is sick. Abuse of their children, killing Americans. I guess there is some political merit that justifies this - bad US government, bad US people, I don’t know. All I do know is that I feel sick at the end of each episode. So I’m through. How can people like this show?

C'mon FX, your shows are good enough without the nudity. There's something called imagination, that you're able to give us credit for in other aspects of shows like The Americans and Justified (for example, the plots), but for some reason we can't picture what a these fine actors look like naked?
