Description

Based on a ripped-from-the-headlines true story, King Cobra is a deliciously dark, twisted plunge into the behind-the-scenes world of the gay pornography industry. It's 2006, YouTube is in its infancy, and internet porn is still behind a paywall. Taking the stage name Brent Corrigan, a fresh-faced, wannabe adult video performer (Garrett Clayton) is molded into a star by Stephen (Christian Slater), a closeted gay porn mogul who runs the skin flick empire Cobra Video from his seemingly ordinary suburban home. But as Brent's rise and demands for more money put him at odds with his boss, he also attracts the attention of a rival producer (James Franco) and his unstable lover (Keegan Allen) who will stop at nothing to squash Cobra Video and steal its number one star. Co-starring Alicia Silverstone and Molly Ringwald, King Cobra is part delirious, tabloid-shocker satire, part American tragedy.

I watched this movie on Netflix 2 or 3 times and liked it so much that I decided I had to buy it.
  • Bland homoerotic boo drama

One of the few instances where the film dramatization is nowhere near as interesting as the story that inspired it. For a film about murder and underage models in the gay adult film world, it feels watered down, tame and oddly bland. Just another case of James Franco gaybaiting his queer audience. I suggest you YouTube the docs about the story instead.

Once again, James Franco presents us with a sloppy and hastily put together film where he get to question “Is he or isn’t he”? Oh, and this time he gets to be a bottom! Big thrill. /s The problem with this movie (and all its variations, including the so-called “true book” it was based on), is that the story is seriously lop-sided to make some people look out to be innocent dupes and other dupes not so innocent. There is still another side of this sordid tale to be told, and that one won’t be coming along for a great many years. Interesting that a few of the “true” characters’ names were legally changed (I guess Brian Kocis’ family didn’t want to besmirch his Eagle Scout Reputation, but when it came to other characters, oh, there was no problem using their Legal Names. Do yourself a favor: save your money. Don’t encourage this kind of movie-making, Instant Trash for Your Quick Cash.

The movie was good, but it needed more depth and sub-storyline.

It's honestly better produced than I initially believed it would be. Great cast with side humor. I believe it would get more attention if it were not about porn, but hey still great.

Like most people on here, I was pleasantly surprised by how good this movie actually was. Sure some of the characters are a little cringe-worthy, but the acting is fantastic, the music is fantastic, and the filming in general is also fantastic.

Christian Slater's portrayal of a man longing to be loved and James Franco's depiction of a possessive, controlling and manipulative one are an amazing contrast. I didn't expect much but I was pleasantly surprised.
