Description

Academy Award winner Humphrey Bogart stars in this classic film noir as tough San Francisco private detective Sam Spade in the classic, convoluted story of Spade's involvement with a deadly band of international thieves who will lie, double cross and murder to obtain a small, jewel-encrusted statue known as The Maltese Falcon. Sam Spade's (Bogart) partner, Miles Archer (Jerome Cowan), accepts a job protecting a young woman (Mary Astor). Neither Spade nor Archer believe the woman or the story she tells them, but they do believe her money. Then, when Archer is murdered, Spade's search for the killer drags him in the web of lies and death spun by the desperate people seeking The Maltese Falcon.

The only reason I rented this movie was because my neighbor said it was good, but I'm definitely not a Bogart fan! I wonder if he ever enjoyed life the way the Creator intended him to.

Outstanding hard boiled movie. Much better than a lot of the crap of today.

A perfect film. Personally, this was not only my first foray into the world of Humphrey Bogart, but also the world of classic film in general - luckily, I couldn’t have chosen a better film. The directing (first-time Director John Huston) and acting is top notch. The dialogue is incredible - which literally encapsulates almost the entire novel word-for-word (except what couldn’t get past the censors at the time, and John Huston just trimmed the novel’s ending, which made the film’s ending even better). It is, in my opinion, the Single Greatest Book-to-Film-Adaptation of All-Time. Do yourself a favor and watch this film. Now. JOEL CAIRO: You always have such a smooth explanation. SAM SPADE: What do you want me to do? Learn to stutter?

Classic Gum-Shoe private dick film. Great lines and Bogart is never better in form or dialogue. This film started him on his path to first-rate movie stardom. The lines from this movie are clever and witty without becoming over-bearing or droll. See this one folks. The characters and script are well in great form and the story plots weaves itself neatly across the screen with an even flow that is intriguing but never confusing (just don't take a long bathroom break).

Excellent at every level. Bogart plays Spade to a tee - read the book by Hammett if you don't believe me. Nailing his partner's wife and only sorry that she becomes such a pain. No white knoght he - especially at the end when he refuses to "play the sap" for Mary Astor when he sends her over. Wow, you go Bogart! Casted perfectly - Sidney Greenstreet's first film and he steals it - even from Bogart who just is great. Peter Lorre as Joel Cairo and Elijah Cook as Wilmer the Gunsel - and who is that Captain Jacoby of the ship La Paloma who appears with the "dingus" at Spade's office and promptly dies? "You know, Falcon." Could it be brilliant director and party machine John Huston's pop the great Walter? Yeah, you got it. Great great great. From start to finish one of the finest films ever made - this is how it is done right sports fans. See it - and maybe you will join the hunt for the "dingus" too. The Whispering Squash

This is a great movie. Great story, great cast. The only thing that I have never liked about this movie is the leading lady. She is supposed to be beautiful enough to make men fight over her and I found her rather plain. My father in law however thinks she is just the Bee's Knees so maybe it is a case of Eye of the Beholder.

Long, slow, boring, too many names to remember and we only meet about half of them, and the objective of the case is just to find some statue...

Haven't seen the original, but this scene stills appear to be incomplete. If you pay attention to the coversation detail, there are parts missing, but it's still a pretty good scene. I only comment on this because I read a review here in iTunes that reported the missing parts were all back in and correct. That comment was what helped me decide to download this movie. If you are a student of this film, dont buy this version. Stick to the version you trust, and probably already own...
