Description

Barbara Streisand is a knockout as Dolly Levi, and Hello, Dolly!, is the blockbuster musical you'll want to see her in again and again. The famed plot involves Dolly, a young widow and professional matchmaker who sets her sights, and whatever else she can muster, on conquering tight-fisted Yonkers merchant, Horace Vandergeider, beautifully played by Walter Matthau.

I loved everything about it! It had a brilliant score and a good cast! Why anyone (none the less a critic) would say it was mediocre is obviously someone who has a just as bad movie taste.

Such a cute story about the busybody woman who just wants everyone to be happy, and connives such ridiculous situations to make it happen. I came across this movie because many years ago, my sister bought the 1987 Original Cast recording of The Phantom of the Opera and I fell in love with Michael Crawford's voice as the Phantom. I fell in love again with the completely opposite character of Cornelius Hackle, the awkward and clumsy shop boy, who just wanted to have a fun day in New York and ended up finding the love of his life.

I was on the set of the Dolly's New York Street just prior to shooting at Age 10 and it blew me away. In the Theater in 70MM it came alive. JohnDeCuir Sr. and his team did an amazing job designing this massive show. He was my hero after that. In 1080P I'm ready to be transported back there again. Thank you Fox for finally bringing this classic back.

Monumental musicals are few and far between. Les Miserables, Jekyll and Hyde, Rent, Little Shop of Horrors just to name examples. But this was the one that topped all of them, and did it with grace. Directed by Mr. Gene "Xanadu" Kelly, Hello Dolly takes place in Yonkers, New York. It's core character Dolly Levi, played by the incomparable Barbara Streisand, is a devious but well meaning matchmaker who sets her sights on rich citizen Horace Vandergelder, played with perfection by the late but great Walter Matthau. Right away those first statements make for a rich plot. But include Michael "Phantom of the Opera" Crawford, and it reaches a pinacle that none of us were prepared for. I was hooked right from the opening song introducing the wily nature of Dolly. This proves that it only takes a moment for Hello Dolly to be imprinted as a huge part of our culture. You must own this titan of musical film. I do!

This movie is fantastic; Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthau are perfect for their parts, the cinematography is gorgeous, the costumes and sets are spectacular, and the choreography is divine. However, I had problems with Michael Crawford (the most obnoxious singer ever, esp. in "Dancing"), and the obvious dubbing of whoever played Irene. Still, this is HIGHLY entertaining.
