  • Baryshnikov and Hines - with a little Mirren added for good measure

The Soviet Union disintegrated 20 years ago, so the story in White Nights is a bit dated. Even back in 1985, when this movie was first released, the over-simplified narative of good vs evil, freedom vs oppression, and us vs them walked the edge of believability. But, no matter. People didn't go to see White Nights in the theatres 25 years ago, or buy/rent it now, for the socio-political message. White Nights is about dancing, and what this movie offers is some of the best dancing ever recorded on film. Baryshnikov and Hines are incredible in their solo offerings, and absolutely spectacular as a duo in every dance scene in this film. Taylor Hackford's directing and cinematography enhance and amplify the power of the dancers' moves and creates an almost palpable sensation of electricity in motion. I've seen this film numerous times and still sit in total awe of Baryshnikov's razor sharp precision and Hines's raw power. And seeing a smoldering, 40-year old Helen Mirren doesn't hurt none either! It's not a "5," but who cares?

This film, an all time favorite of mine, stands against the test of time. Baryshnikov at his peak, and its a treasure to see him and Hines dancing together. The storyline is action packed, driven, and romantic-suitable for men and women, and the plot is so original. I reccomend this film to everyone, of all ages. It will never get old!! Oh, and one heck of a soundtrack! I LOVE this cinematic masterpiece!!
