Description

Two journalists set out to document their friend's journey to reunite with his estranged sister. They track her to an undisclosed location where they are welcomed into the remote world of “Eden Parish,” a self-sustained rural utopia composed of nearly two hundred members and overseen by a mysterious leader known only as “Father.” It quickly becomes evident to the newcomers that this paradise may not be as it seems. Eden Parish harbors a twisted secret. What started as just another documentary shoot soon becomes a fight for survival.

Ti West's horror film take on a Jonestown Cult-like situation that fails at what it appears to be attempt to do. Unexpectedly powerful and disturbing moments from some of the very talented cast members are wasted. Gene Jones is particularly memorable as the leader of the cult. And Amy Seimetz and Kentucker Audley give detailed and brutally realistic performances far too good for what turns out to be nothing more than cheap horror. There was so much potential to actually explore the psychological dynamics of a Cult Culture and its dire use of manipulation and control. But West is more intent on trying to make a scary movie that isn't scary. It's just unpleasant.
  • Probably the worst movie I have ever seen.

The first half an hour or so made me think that this movie could possible turn out better then the 62% RottenTomatoe rating suggested, but after that it went downhill so quickly that I doubt anyone who rated this movie actually sat through the entire thing. Apparently poor acting is much harder to hide when the intensity of the movie picks up because by the end of this movie I found it hard to believe ANY of the characters and I feel like I was tricked into watching until the end by a slightly amusing first third of the film. Save your $4.99 and buy yourself something nice, you're welcome!!!

What the hell did I just watch? The star is for anyone who sat through that debacle.
  • Not a Horror Movie

Thank goodness I only paid $0.99 for this... This basically is about Jonestown. It is not a horror flick as listed, more like a drama. I like the way it was shot and it was realistic but that's about all that I did like
  • Troubling tale that makes you wonder..

I had no problem with this being a "historical fiction” on the Jonestown event. Ti West does a great job of building the uneasy feeling from the beginning. This movie is slow pace, but rightfully so. Gene Jones kills his role as "Father” and the creep factor is always present when he is on screen. The ending became a bit unclear as we jump around from different perspectives and did not leave me with a satisfying resolve. But I think Ti West is leading doing great things in the horror genre.

Even though it was a Jonestown remake, it was an amazing movie
  • Disturbing and tense

Welcome to Eden Parish- you ain't leaving!!! This is a film of dread that the outcome will not be good. Some scenes of gore and lots of deaths. Eli Roth once again gives us a neat thriller not horror. This film becomes tense as the movie comes to an end.

I keep trying to review this piece of trash, but somehow it does not save. Jonestownian retrospective without suspense and predictable. Watch teletubbies reruns for more excitement. Should have titled it "The Excrement"
