Description

Academy Award-winner Jack Nicholson ("The Bucket List," "As Good As It Gets") stars as Warren Schmidt, an embittered man who has just retired after 32 years as an insurance company actuary. When his wife dies suddenly, Warren packs up the 35-foot Winnebago that he and his wife had planned to travel the country in and sets out on a journey across the Nebraska plains to Denver, Colorado, for his daughter's wedding to a waterbed salesman whom Warren despises. Every move Warren makes seems wrong, and he appears destined to end his life as he lived it: a failure. But along the way, Warren recounts his journey to and shares his observations with an unexpected friend -- a poor Tanzanian orphan whom Warren is sponsoring for 73 cents a day. In his long letters to the boy, Warren begins to see himself -- and the life he has lived -- in a new light.

Have no idea why this was rated as a comedy. Drama would be more appropriate. While the story line was good, it was boring and a struggle to get through it.
  • Dark, depressing

I wish I had never seen this film. Despite the fine actors in Jack Nicholson and Kathy Bates, the script and direction are either lacking or intended to be dank. How it can be labeled a comedy, l'll never understand although I suppose it has to be smushed into some sort of genre category. Schmidt is hardly the God's gift to women he takes himself to be. Give yourself a gift and see Kathy Bates (again?) in Misery and Jack Nicholson in Anger Management. Fine performances especially for Kathy Bates. But, by all means, avoid this film. If you knew me, you’d thank me.

A poignant, thought-provoking masterpiece. Jack Nicholson is in top-form here. A must see.

Literally the most depressing movie I've ever seen. Not sure why this is labeled as a comedy.

Not comedy at all. End with tears, come on... It's sad, of course good performance, but, but Gender is wrong. I will say melodrama.

...say this movie is anything less than a masterpiece of comedy? You would have to have sour grapes in your throat. Nicholson's impulse toward philanthropy is one of the wittiest premises I've partaken in in the landscape of dark comedy in years. It's a must see.
